And, a huge thanks to all of the event organizers and communities who have engaged with us throughout the last few months. Regardless of whether we were able to work together or not, it is humbling to see the passion that so many people in the open geo / humanitarian space bring to their work.

We have made funding available to support mappers and volunteers to travel to each of the collaborating events in the HOT unSummit programme to learn, share and connect.

That's the whole point of the unSummit, to take the positive message of the humanitarian open mapping movement to new people and places.

You will be able to meet mappers from across the world, learn from new people and organisations, and represent out vibrant global community on the world stage.

Networking

In our ongoing mission to bring together communities, partners, collaborators, and supporters of humanitarian open mapping, we are trying a fresh approach to the HOT Summit. Instead of hosting a single event, this year we are investing our time and resources in supporting global, regional, and local conferences and community events around the world to bring the spirit of the Summit to thousands of new people.

We want to support the global community of thousands of dedicated mappers using maps and open data for humanitarian response and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and the humanitarian and development partners like the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, UN agencies, governments and others that use open maps and data to do their lifesaving work.

Inclusive

In 2022 we will focus only on priority country locations for the HOT Summit as our hypothesis (based on previous experiences, but especially on the 2018 Summit in Dar-es-Salaam) is that an event in the regions where we are active and want to support impact through OpenStreetMap better serves communities and partners in those regions and maximizes access and value for people living there.

We want to use the Summit as a way of supporting other events and communities, so we are contributing value across a network, rather than centralizing it in one place.

Our hypothesis is that, through this distributed, networked approach, we can bring the spirit and impact of the HOT Summit to new places and audiences and support the growth of the open humanitarian open mapping movement regionally, at the same time as investing in and developing impactful collaborations with a wide variety of communities and organizations at a national, regional and international level.

Collaborative

We are calling this the HOT unSummit emphasizing the continuity of this new approach with HOT’s flagship annual event without claiming a ‚higher ground‘ compared to the events we partner and collaborate with.
